Kintsugi Trial Lesson

3-Session Plan

This is a condensed, three-part workshop where you can experience the full flow of the kintsugi process.

In this three-session workshop (approximately two hours each), you’ll learn to repair a broken sake cup using the beautiful art of Kintsugi.
In this unique experience, you will use real urushi lacquer to repair a chipped ceramic vessel.
Your instructor is a professional lacquer artist who majored in the subject at the Tokyo University of the Arts.
With small groups of up to four participants, you’ll receive careful and personalized instruction.
For this workshop, you will practice on a sake cup. You can choose your favorite from a variety of colors, all handmade by Uzumako Ceramic Art School instructors!

Session 1

Learn how to mix and apply a paste made from lacquer to fill the chip in your sake cup. (2H)

Session 2

Shape the repaired area and then use a brush to apply lacquer. (2H)

Final Session

You’ll polish the surface of the lacquer and apply a final layer. While the lacquer is still wet, you’ll sprinkle on the metallic powder to complete your piece. You can take your finished item home the same day! It will be ready to use in about one week.(2H)
The entire process takes about one month to complete, with roughly a week between each session. You will schedule your future sessions with the instructor directly at the end of each class.

Hello!
After studying lacquerware techniques at university, I worked at a gallery specializing in tableware, where I also studied ceramics.
One of the attractions of Kintsugi is the ability to repair broken pottery, I feel that its greatest appeal is being able to escape from everyday life and spend time immersed in the task at hand.
I will provide thorough instruction that is easy to understand, even for first-timers.

Access

If you walk down the narrow path to the right of the Uzumako Pottery Studio Annex, you will find a brown door leading to the Kintsugi class. Please go through that door and up the stairs to the second floor of the annex.

Please note that the stairs are quite steep, so please take care if you have any difficulty with your legs or mobility.
